canadian reflections

I saw this on TV last night. It's about a girl who cuts open her boyfriend everytime they have an argument so she can take out the bad feelings. I saw a trailer for it a few months ago but couldn't find it anywhere online and had pegged it as one of those short films that only goes to festivals in Banff and wouldn't really get released so I would never see it. Thank you, Canadian Reflections (by the way, 2011 called, they said you should update your logo because it's not 1989 anymore)!

It was...fucked. To say the least. But it looks so beautiful and it's actually really sweet in a very messed up kind of way. It was directed by Nadia Litz, who was in Love That Boy by Andrea Dorfman, which was kind of fucked too because it's about a 21 year old control freak of a woman (played by Litz) who has no friends because she's too uptight but then falls in love with her fourteen year old neighbour and learns to loosen up (but only a little bit). Ellen Page plays the neighbour's annoying crush (when does she not play annoying ______ ?).

The photography is great and kind of reminds me of Sofia Coppola, in particular The Virgin Suicides, with really soft lighting and pale colors. I'm happy that for once there was something worth watching on late night CTV.

And what is this guy's deal! He has a weird face, which isn't a bad thing. I'm just sayin'. He's like Salad Fingers, only he would be Pickle Fingers.

  1. Yeah I remember seeing that trailer a long time ago too! So the film is good? It looks good. I agree about the cinematography, for what I can see of it in those stills and the trailer. I remember not liking Love That Boy so much though, it was slightly boring and slightly annoyingly done, in my opinion. But it's just my opinion.

    Don't surgicate me!

Nice new layout, by the way. Not sure I like that the header is split in two though. It's weird.

  2. It was really good.
I was just looking at the header and wondering if I liked that it is split, and I decided that I do. I don't know. But I lost the Winnie header and I don't know how to get it back! She's gone forever! Sad!
