Take This Waltz is the new film by Sarah Polley, starring Michelle Williams as a woman trying to figure herself and her relationships out during a hot summer in Toronto. I saw this film in October at the Festival de Nouveau Cinema and I don't know if it's because I was overly emotional or something at the time but it really touched me and I thought it was great. It's extremely well acted and mostly well written (the dialogue is a little bit hoaky at times.) What struck me the most though was the use of color and the intricately detailed set decorating. It. is. beautiful. You might need to suspend belief a little bit because it's a little hard to imagine that a struggling cook book writer and a 20-something pamphlet editor for Parks Canada can afford such a beautiful, settled home in downtown Toronto - likewise for the artist who lives in an open airy loft space across the street - but if you can accept this and just look it totally works within the frame of the story and is definitely a huge player in the film.
Margot (Michelle Williams) and Lou's (Seth Rogen) home looks like one that's been lived in for fifty years, with all of the collected knick knacks and furniture. I couldn't help but thinking what hell it would have been to move in with all of that stuff.
The collection of antiques and quirky knick knacks mixed with the rich colors of the walls and furniture are not altogether calming, which makes for an interesting setting for a confused woman in the middle of making life changing decisions (woah, heavy).
I probably wouldn't have enjoyed it as much had it not been for the set decoration. I'm pretty sure Take This Waltz is in theatres now, so if you feel like watching a cute girl fall in and out of love with some cute boys in a cute house on a cute street then you should see it.
